Almaty overview

АAlmaty, also referred as “a southern capital of Kazakhstan”, formerly (1855-1921) Verny, the ex-capital of Kazakhstan, is situated in the southeastern part of Kazakhstan (Almaty oblast) at the foot of Zailiski Alatau mountain range at an elevation of 2,300-3,000 feet (700-900 m).

In spring, when southern outskirts are buried in blossom of apple, apricot, and cherry gardens, the city becomes a fabulous sight. Its magnificent green attire and the grand panorama of the mountains distinguish Almaty from other cities. Exotic Almaty tourism is something that the traveler within one day can become a witness of the five climatic zones. Follow the path from the hot desert to the eternal snows. The natural complex of this region contributes to the prosperity of the various kinds of tourism.

Almaty is often called an apple garden city because in Kazakh language “Alma” means an apple. Almaty city has 80 sq.m. of green plantations for each of its million-odd residents. Mountain rivers and lakes are the main source of water supply to the city. In the mountain gorges, there are a lot of waterfalls, and thermal radon and sulphuric sources used as the basis for balneological spas. Talgar (5017 m), Komsomol (today's Nursultan. 4376 m). and Bolshoi Almatinski (3684 m) peaks prevail over the range of picturesque summits surrounding the city from the south. Some summits rising beyond the clouds are as high as European Mont Blanc, Caucasian Kazbek, and American Tajumulco.

The climate in the city is markedly continental, with considerable fluctuations in temperature not only between different seasons but also between day and night. From a height of 500 metres, the streets lead to the north, to the steppe and semi-desert, coming close to the hot Kaskelen Moyunkuins. In the southern residential areas, at an altitude of 1520-1750 metres above sea level, in the Medeu Tract and the Kamenski Plateau, you can feel the breath of glaciers of the "mountain Arctic".

Average annual wind speed is twice as little as in Moscow. Average temperature of July is the same as on the islands of Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Kalimantan (Borneo), or Java. Average temperature of January can be compared with that in the north of Norway.

The period of sunshine is long, up to 1596 hours a year; there are up to 151 frost-free days. These and other favourable natural and climatic factors provide unique opportunities for promotion of sport and tourism.

Almaty economics

With its considerable natural resources and economic potential, many western economists predict a bright future for Kazakhstan. It is one of the world’s richest countries with regard to both the variety and quantity of its minerals. Under the surface, Kazakhstan contains virtually all the elements of the periodic table. It possesses 25% of the world’s uranium, 19% of its lead, 13% of its zinc, 10% of its copper and iron, and significant reserves of wolfram, gold, manganese, molybdenum, phosphates, barites, and chrome and iron ores.

Kazakhstan also has major agricultural assets. Its vast expanses of land represent great potential for the development of both arable and livestock farming. Almost every crop that can be raised in a temperature climate is grown in Kazakhstan, especially grains: spring wheat oats and barley.

The economy is based on industry and agriculture: power, metals, fuel, chemicals and machine-building, networked oil and gas pipelines, railways and roads, modern telecommunications and aviation.

Almaty city is business and cultural centre of Kazakhstan. Almaty is now a major industrial center, with the food industry accounting for about one-third of its industrial output, and light industry one-fourth.

Republic Square and Old Square

Almaty's main square is the largest and most picturesque in the city, with magnificent ensemble of modern architectire. The square will always be associated with the memory of those who died in tragic events of december 1986-the protest by Kazakh students.

To the south-east are the President's Southern Residence, the former government building(now the Akimat or city hall) and the national television centre. The Central State Museum is situated east of the square, and the Regent Ankara Hotel is on the western side. The architectural ensemble is completed by two high rise residential blocks and the adjacent buildings with Eastern-style stained glass windows.

Fountains cascade down Baiseitova st. all the way to Old Square. On the clear day they make a stunning picture with Republic Square and Alatau mountains in the background. There is a platform above the square from which state officials used to watch processions, parades and ceremonies now there is an art gallery under it.

At the very centre of Republic Square stands the 18-metre high Monument to Independence designed by Shota Valikhanov, a well-known Kazakh architecture. The obelisk is topped with the figure of Sacae warrior-an exact replica of the Golden Man – with a winged snow leopard in flight, and flanked by worked metal panels depicting key events in Kazakhstan’s history. A plaque at foot of the obelisk bears the palm-print the President made on the Constitution when he was sworn in. Monument is a comparatively recent (1996) addition to the square, which was designed in 1982.

Almaty's second largest square was designed in 1957 by central planners in Moscow and is therefore completely different in style from Republic Square. Here stands the former Parliament Building, where until the capital was moved to Astana fateful decisions were made;it was here that first Parliment in Kazakhstan's history adopted the first Constitution as a sovereign state. The building now houses the Kazakh-British Technical University. The former parliament is surrounded on all sides by pretty public gardens with flower beds and fountains.

Kok-Tyube (Green Peak)

Kok-Tobe so called because it is covered with grass and bushes,is 1070 meters high - is not only the charm of the mountains, the fresh, clean air and a sense of freedom, it is also a place to meet friends, walk in love, rest with the children and just a pleasant pastime. On a clear day you can enjoy a magnificent panorama of Almaty from the viewing platform on top of the hill.

At the foot of the mountain Kok-Tobe rises 350-meter TV tower. When measured from sea level, this tower is one of the highest in the world. The television tower is a useful landmark for tourist since it can be seen from any point in the city.

Monument «The Beatles» May 15, 2007 at Mount Kok-Tobe Inauguration of benches «Beatles», in the launch of the National Prize "Musical feature - 2007". This is the first and the only monument to the legendary Liverpool quartet in full: John Lennon with a guitar sitting on a bench behind him are Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. Sculptor benches «Beatles» were designed by a famous sculptor Eduard Kazarian. Fountain desires "Alma". Fountain desires "Alma" first meets guests at Kok-Tobe and is always crowded. Somebody just enjoying the coolness of it, someone thoughtfully tossing a coin in its transparent depths, while others are photographed in memory against the backdrop of huge granite apple, a symbol of the sun city of Almaty.

There are several ways of getting there you can either take the cable which links Kok-Tyube with Abai Square on Dostyk Avenue(open every day),or you can drive up:head south along Dostyk, then turn east just south of the hotel Alatau. You can also walk up the hill along one of the little streets east of Luganskovo. There are several pleasant restaurant and cafes at the top.

This architectural landmark is one of just eight unique wooden structures in the world. The Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Ascension has a striking beauty and splendour. It was built in 1904-1907,designed by the architect A.Zenkov with wall paintings by Nikolai Khludov. The cathedral is about 50 meters high yet, interestingly,it withstood the very severe earthquake of 1910. Used as a museum during the Soviet peroid, the cathedral reopened for church services in 1997.There is small souvenir stand inside where Orthodox devotional items can be purchased.

Zenkov Cathedral.

Located in Panfilov Park at the northern end of Dostyk Av this is in my opinion one of the most attractive buildings in Almaty. The outside is just beautiful especially on a snowy morning. The inside is no less impressive, really go inside you just have to. This Russian Orthodox cathedral is built entirely of wood, no nails either. Just amazing. Also one of the few Tzarist buildings to survive the big earthquake of 1911.
